Seminar "Permit-mania and Social Housing: Pending Challenges"

Researcher Ignacio Aravena presented the study “The high cost of bad decisions”, on the elimination of the Special Credit for Construction Companies (Crédito Especial de las Empresas Constructoras, CEEC) and the consequences this might have on the industry. The discussion included the participation of José Antonio Valenzuela (Advocacy Director at Pivotes), who spoke about so-called “permit-mania” with more than 70 attendants, both in person and online.

First Activity with P!ensa Young Leaders 2023

In the context of the fire that affected the municipalities of Viña del Mar and Quilpué, members of Fundación P!ensa and P!ensa Joven reactivated the “Todos Ayudamos” (“We All Help”) campaign, an initiative that sought to guarantee children’s return to school in some of the affected areas. Thanks to the donations collected during February, they managed to deliver boxes with school supplies and new backpacks to 159 pupils. Additionally, as part of the closing of the campaign, they conducted recreational activities at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez with the families of Liceo Santa Teresa de Los Andes.

Chile Dialoga

Fundación P!ensa and Faro UDD presented the results of the “Chile Dialoga” study, an investigation between P!ensa and IDEA (Ohio State University’s “Institute for Democratic Engagement and Accountability”), at ICARE. It applied innovative international mechanisms of citizen participation, and four former members of the Constitutional Council and more than 3,500 Chilean citizens took part. Some of the most important presenters were Michael Neblo (director of IDEA), Nicole Cardoch (Under-Secretary General of Government), Ignacio Irarrázaval (director of Centro de Políticas Públicas UC), and María Paz Raveau (academic at Faro UDD). More than 100 people participated in the activity, including academics, representatives of think tanks, and authorities.

Jóvenes Líderes (Young Leaders) Award

In an event organised by Fundación P!ensa in collaboration with the Mutual de Seguros de Chile, the 18 winners of the 8th Jóvenes Líderes contest were recognized one by one for their contributions through different disciplines to development of the Valparaíso Region. The event was attended by several local authorities, who met with the community of leaders. Also, the co-founder of Socialab, Julián Ugarte, spoke to the audience about how to innovate today.

Lunch with Karla Rubilar

Karla Rubilar, former Minister Spokesperson of the Government, visited the P!ensa offices to hold a meeting with 17 university leaders from various careers and universities. During the meeting, the former minister talked about her views, her experience in the Piñera administration, and the main challenges faced in that position: her arrival to the government after October 18 and the pandemic. Rubilar also had the opportunity to give a detailed explanation of the Reconstruction Plan for Viña del Mar that was recently presented by collaborators of the former President. The activity was part of the P!ensa School of Public Policies program.

Visit from International Students

In collaboration with the School for International Training (SIT) program, around twenty students from different parts of the US visited Fundación P!ensa. They received information about its work and about the Valparaíso Region’s current quality-of-life status based on data from the foundation’s Quality of Life Survey.
They also addressed the great fire that affected the municipalities of Greater Valparaíso, its consequences for people’s quality of life and some points on housing and urban planning for reconstruction.
