Esmeralda training ship docks in Puerto Williams
On Thursday, October 12, the Chilean Navy training ship Esmeralda (BE-43) arrived in Puerto Williams, on the northern coast of Navarino Island, after sailing across Cape Horn and having visited ports in Peru, Panama, Colombia, the United States, Brazil and Argentina, within the framework of the LXVII Training Cruise.
Her arrival was a true celebration for the residents of Puerto Williams, especially for the CEDENA students, who had the privilege of touring the Flagship and spending time with its crew. They took the opportunity to talk to them about the nautical school, its activities and their dreams.
The grand highlight was that the children and the executive director of CEDENA were cordially invited to the ship’s 70th anniversary, which will be celebrated in the Port of Cadiz in August 2024.
Inclusive sailing workshops for children with ASD are back
In October, and as is tradition, CEDENA PW resumed the nautical workshops for children diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). Accompanied by their parents and/or guardians, the students had the opportunity to navigate the Beagle Channel, guided by instructors Eduardo and Roberto. In doing so, the nautical school brings sailing to the entire Puerto Williams community.
It has been proven that sailing reduces stress, improves general health, increases motor skills, improves self-confidence and helps develop social skills (communication, camaraderie, coordinated work), among others.
Training with the Silversea team
The cruise ship season is approaching, and with it, the flow of passengers and tourists who will visit Puerto Williams.
In accordance with the collaboration agreement, CEDENA PW monitors carried out various training sessions for the Silversea team, who were able to learn first-hand about the climatic requirements of the Beagle Channel and how to handle boat traffic to bring cruise ships and their visitors closer to the Island.
